The best destinations you never thought to visit

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Monday, June 08, 2009 | | 2 comments »

It's pretty obvious why some places are vacation destinations. Las Vegas has casinos and shows, the Caribbean's turquoise waters beckon, and Paris is, well, Paris. But don't overlook the places that aren't always in the limelight...

Ozark National Forest, Arkansas

Much more than the birthplace of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, Arkansas is also full of natural wonders. Take a drive through the mountains in Ozark National Forest, or stretch your legs by hiking part (or all) of its Ozark Highland Trail.

Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge, Oklahoma

Native American history and culture are the main reasons to visit Oklahoma. See the burial mounds at Spiro Mounds Archaeological Park or, for a glimpse of living history, watch the herds of bison at Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge.

Bison Crossing River, North Dakota

North Dakota is often overlooked in favor of its southern counterpart, but there are plenty of reasons to make the trek. Learn about U.S. history and enjoy wildlife viewing with a visit to Elkhorn Ranch in Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Nunavut, Canada

Chilly and remote, the Canadian province of Nunavut is rewarding in its own right—if you can afford to get there. Pristine arctic landscapes; abundant wildlife, including polar bears; and the northern lights are all part of its wild beauty.

Maletsunyane Falls, Lesotho

Hiking, horseback riding and fabulous mountain vistas are the main reasons to visit tiny Lesotho, in southern Africa. Accommodations are rustic, but totally worth the views at places such as Katse Dam and Maletsunyane Falls.

Wild Horses Drinking, Mongolia

Learn about Mongolia's nomadic culture while traveling by horseback past ancient Buddhist monasteries. The Gobi Desert offers wildlife viewing of both the modern (horses, leopards) and ancient (dinosaur fossils) varieties.

Ohrid, Macedonia

Part of an ancient trade route between Rome and Istanbul, Macedonia's attractions are as diverse as its history. Visit medieval churches in the lakeside town of Ohrid, Tetovo's beautiful mosque and the ruins of a fourth-century city in Bitola.

Golden Poison Dart Frog, Suriname

Suriname's dense rain forest is the country's main attraction. If you're able, visit the remote Eilerts De Haan Gebergte Reserve. You may spot birds, monkeys or, if you're lucky, the brilliantly colored but lethal Golden Poison Dart Frog.

Rocky Coastline, Oman

Residents of Oman still practice many traditional customs, including fishing from hand-build dhows, and nomadic lifestyles among the rocks and gorges. The country's landscape varies from coast to desert to mountains.

Tsechu Festival in Thimphu, Bhutan

An organized tour is the only way to visit Bhutan and it costs a pretty penny, but that's how this tiny Buddhist country protected its unique culture. If you're lucky enough to go, you may see an elaborate religious celebration, such as Thimphu's Tsechu Festival.

Nunavut is not a province; it is a territory.
